Verification against a stated specification

Calibration establishes a machine's relationship to reference values with stated uncertainty. What most shops need day to day is performance verification: confirming the machine still meets its MPE under ISO 10360-2 or ASME B89.4.1.

As-found results are recorded before any geometric adjustment. Where the controller supports it, an updated volumetric error compensation map follows adjustment, and as-left results close the visit.

What a visit covers

A verification visit follows a fixed sequence in a set order, from scale inspection through as-left sign-off. Large-envelope machines used for aerostructure tooling and assembly fixtures are verified in place wherever transport is impractical.

  • 01

    Scale and reader head

X, Y and Z scales are inspected and cleaned; reader head output is checked.

  • 02

    Air bearings and geometry

Airline condition, straightness, linearity and squareness in three planes are checked.

  • 03

    Length measurement error

ISO 10360-2 E0/E150 testing: five lengths, three repeats, seven positions, 105 measurements.

  • 04

    Probing error

ISO 10360-5 form error on a calibrated test sphere separate from the qualification reference sphere.

  • 05

    Repair and retrofit

Probe heads, scales, air bearings, drives, counterbalance and controller retrofits after a crash or relocation.

Sequence of a verification visit

  • 01

    Soak and inspect

Thermal soak, then scale, reader head and air bearing inspection.

  • 02

    As-found testing

Geometry, length measurement error and probing error recorded before adjustment.

  • 03

    Adjustment

Geometric adjustment and, where the controller allows, an updated error map.

  • 04

    As-left and certificate

Repeat testing as-left, then certificate issue with uncertainty stated.

Why Kansas City CMM Calibration and Repair

  • 01

    As-found is recorded

Out-of-tolerance results are captured before adjustment erases the evidence.

  • 02

    Large-envelope capable

On-site verification suits large aerostructure fixture and tooling CMMs.

  • 03

    Repair through retrofit

Probe, scale, bearing and controller repair sit alongside verification.
